Let's start with a basic question: Would you spend the night in someone's spare bedroom? If so, you'd probably be a good candidate for a British Bed & Breakfast, which can be cheaper than the average hotel room. After not being successful in finding a motel because of the NASCAR race that weekend, we found an adorable apartment over someone’s garage overlooking the mountains in Virginia.
That’s exactly the type of thinking that will help you enjoy traveling, Beverly. Flexibility and a willingness to try something new can be very effective. It doesn’t always work out as well as your experience in Virginia, but many times you’ll at least save a little money.

Is there any such deal in continental
Europe? If so, how do you go for it?
HospitalityClub.org is another great resource. Virtually every country is represented. We used it to travel in Europe this past summer and we loved it! Not only did it save us lots of money, it also introduced us to really great local people, several of whom we continue to keep in touch with. We have also hosted some people through the program as well, which has also been fun experience.
There are no fees involved — it’s just about people who enjoy meeting others from different parts of the world, or from different parts of the same country, for that matter.
You have the ability to discreetly review the profiles of potential hosts or guests — any match is purely voluntary. There is also the option for people to post comments about the people they stayed with, or who stayed with them.
Some people have compared it to another older program called, SERVAS.
