When I started writing for About.com in 1999, money-conscious travelers were serving as air couriers. They'd agree to carry a parcel overseas. In return for their baggage allotment, the traveler got a trans-oceanic flight at a greatly reduced price. Courier flights still exist, but they are now far less common.
