Sunday November 30, 2008
Seniors will be among the fastest growing segments of the budget traveler population in the next few years. Travel providers are well aware of the buying power in the over-50 crowd, and they offer discounts to get this lucrative business. Joan Rattner Heilman has updated her popular guidebook that details where these deals can be found. Read a a review of the book before you travel.

Mark – I totally agree with you – and many, many of those seniors/boomers (argh – are WE seniors?) want to take road trips. Not only are they economical, yes, even in an RV, they are great opportunities for learning about our great country’s history, learning about the people all over the US and for learning about your travel partner. Nothing can compare.
As we vagabonded around the US for an entire year, we met hundreds of people who wanted to do what we were doing – but had many questions about HOW to actually extricate yourself from your everyday life to do it. When we returned, we wrote the A-Z guide to making it happen – “Live Your Road Trip Dream” – now there is no excuse for not living your dream trip. It is available pretty much everywhere including our website http://www.roadtripdream.com

I enjoyed reading your review of this book which, I expect, will be mainly aimed at American market with good travel deals for the over 50s. As you pointed out, this is the type of book that’s useful but will quickly date. As such, the information might be better provided as a subscription ezine so that it could be constantly updated.
Not having read the book, I wonder if it goes beyond discounts available on travel for the over 50s to alternative travel options such as home exchange. We have been operating a home exchange service, Home Base Holidays, from London for 24 years, and there has definitely been an increase in the numbers of members over 50 in the last few years. This is a trend I expect to see continue and is a great way to make savings on travel during a down turn in the economy.
