Baggage Fees Keep Increasing

Sunday January 11, 2009
Have you noticed that many airlines continue to boost their fees for checked baggage and oversized or overweight luggage? Just a few months ago, airlines such as AirTran, Northwest and Continental allowed one checked bag free of charge. Now, each charges $15 for that privilege in many situations. EasyJet has boosted its charge per kilogram for overweight bags by more than a third, and Spirit Airlines plans to increase its charge for a first checked bag from $15 to $19 in April. Are you up-to-date on all the new baggage fees? Use this menu to find links to policies for 10 leading low cost carriers, 10 major world airlines and even some budget packing tips. Let those who insist on dragging bulky bags pay these fees. Keep your baggage to a minimum and save cash for something fun.

Thanks for the info. I for one don’t want to risk throwing out my back, and possibly ruining my vacation, by lifting even the best-packed suitcase into the overhead…Nor do I want to try and depend on the “the kindness of strangers” to do so for me. For that reason, I continue to check my bag (just one) and appreciate knowing which airlines still provide a remnant of service. After all, the bag weighs the same however it enters the plane.
