Changes Likely in U.S. Policy About Travel to Cuba

By , About.com Guide   April 5, 2009

The New York Times and other major news outlets report a bi-partisan effort is underway in the U.S. congress to make travel to Cuba legal for all U.S. citizens. Such a trip has been illegal for most Americans since 1961. Cuban-Americans who are U.S. citizens currently are allowed one visit each year. Other American travelers have found ways around the restrictions to enter Cuba.

But there are many who believe allowing such travel -- which would enable more money to flow into the coffers of the Castro regime -- is a blunder unless human rights concessions are received prior to the change.

Budget travelers who have visited Cuba report problems with currency exchanges, overcharging for meals and rooms, and other issues. But prices can be low and sunsets along largely deserted beaches are beautiful. Would you visit Cuba?

Of course I would. The rest of the world has been able to enjoy Cuba’s beaches for decades, why shouldn’t US Citizens go?
Those who want to go have been going for years via Bahamas, Mexico or Canada.
It is a failed policy like so many others of the US foreign policies. I thought we liked and promoted freedom not communist travel restrictions.
It is time that we can all go

I fully agree with Tim in every since of the word, I also feel that there will be many surprises waiting for us. A buddy from spain vacations there every year for two weeks, he is not the only one half of Europe seems to share the same. Let’ go I am ready for some Lenchon Asado & Garlic Chicken.
