Boy, these items to avoid are really elementary and clearly for very inexperienced travelers.
How about searching for lodging on various websites, same goes for air tix.
One big misconception nowadays is that European Railpasses are a money saving option. They used to be, but not anymore…unless you travel huge amounts of miles. This doesn’t get reported much since the pass sellers are big advertisers.

Chris, that gets reported all the time. Even the rail pass vendors will say up front that passes aren’t always the best option. They provide online calculators so you can see whether point-to-point is cheaper than the pass.

I’ve never advised people to buy passes without checking other options.

If you are going to go down the path of buying a rail pass, it is really important to choose the most suitable rail pass for your intended use. Consider whether you are going, how many trips you will be making, the cost of individual trips if you weren’t going to take up the option of a rail pass. Buying a rail pass can save you money, but only if you have done your homework.
