Mark Kahler, licensed to About.comWhen you shop for airfares, do you search only one airport? If so, you could be cheating yourself out of lower airfares.

The savings isn't always greener at a more distant airport. But depending upon the market conditions in your departure city, sometimes driving just a few miles to a slightly less convenient airport can result in significant savings. You don't have to understand the market forces at work. You simply need to perform that extra search for airports within a reasonable distance of your preferred airport.

The same level of savings could be available at your destination. Sometimes, arriving at a more distant airport results in airfare savings.

Consider a few examples that illustrate how alternative airports can save money on air travel .
