Bump Me, Please!
Beat the Airlines at their Own Game

By , About.com Guide

So you want to trade a delay for some type of airfare reward? Don't make a final commitment to voluntary bumping until you know what will be offered from the airline. Remember that airline offers vary by carrier and situation.

In the United States, the D.O.T. does not specify compensation, so a final agreement should come only after some important issues are settled to your satisfaction. Flight arrangements for the current trip top the list. Make certain you can get on that airline's next flight to your destination. If not, you want a guaranteed flight on another airline.

Take note: In recent years, the value of what's offered in return for a voluntary bump has decreased. You'll probably be offered a travel voucher that's good for deeply discounted or free flights on a future trip. Be certain today's inconvenience will pay off. Is a discount coupon worth the trouble when you really want a round trip ticket? It's like any other negotiation: If you're not happy, be prepared to walk away.

Delays of more than two hours should entitle you to meal vouchers and perhaps admission to the airline's V.I.P. club. Don't be afraid to ask about these items.

You might find yourself bumped from the second flight, too. Travel writer Tom Parsons says it is possible to earn two or more free tickets[/link] in a single day.

Reading Material is Essential

You'll spend a long time sitting at the airport, so bring along your favorite magazines and novels.

Other recommended reading: timetables for airlines that fly from your departure airport. These will be important if you can't get another immediate flight following the bump. Attendants have been known to say "sorry, none of the other airlines will be able to help you."

If you can point out that there is indeed a flight to your destination leaving in 45 minutes, they will have to work it out for you--and you will feel very, very good about using the airline rules and timetables to beat them at their own game!
