Bidding for your Business
What You Need to Know

By Mark Kahler, About.com

Know the approximate market value of the trip.

These sites can save you hours of shopping, but they should not be a shortcut for good homework. Go to conventional travel sites and price out that cruise or hotel room.

Be suspicious of offers that are far below the market value. Notice I say "suspicious," because not all rock-bottom prices indicate a problem. Sometimes they are last-minute deals that are legitimate but incredible. But in other cases, the so-called bargain doesn't include something vital or it comes with other strings attached.

Be realistic. These companies are in business to make money. Don't expect a giveaway.

Ask a lot of questions..

People trained as travel agents are ready for your questions. They expect them. There are bound to be a few things you don't expect, but minimize the surprises up front.

The more participants, the better.

If this trend catches on, there will be a lot of start-up sites. Initially, they might not have the volume of participants, and hence, a less-competitive environment. Sites that include the major players are more apt to have the best deals.

Think twice about paying a membership fee.

The Web sites I listed here did not require a registration fee at the time the article was written. If sites spring up that charge a fee, ask yourself if you'll be using them enough to justify the expense, and if they offer anything better than the free sites.

These sites tend to benefit experienced travelers more than novices.

If you've never been on a cruise, you might want to sit down with an agent and at least learn the ropes before the first trip. People who already know the best hotels in a given city or the cruise line that sails to their favorite beach should find these newest reverse auction cousins much to their liking.
