Find a Frugal Travel Agent

Decisions, decisions...

By Mark Kahler, About.com

Look for good value, not just low price.

Let's say a travel agent gets you a rock-bottom deal on the worst trip of your life. How long will you remember the low price? My guess is memories of the unpleasant details will linger longer than thoughts of the money you saved.

There are times when spending a little more money is actually a frugal decision. If a small motel upgrade gets you closer to what you want to see in a given city, the time and frustration savings could far outweigh some additional cost.

It bears repeating: time is money, whether in business or on vacation.

Remember that scam artists usually lure their victims with low prices. Check out any deal that is below market price.

Find an agent that is bonded and accessible.

Each year, thousands of people give good money to someone who either goes bankrupt or leaves town without delivering the trip.

Be certain your agent is insured, and that all deposits can be recovered if someone goes out of business prior to your departure.

Many agents also offer 24-hour phone lines to travelers who might have important questions.

Focus on local agents.

Someone who deals with you face-to-face is often more likely to take good care of you than someone on a toll-free line.

As with all of these tips, there are notable exceptions to this one. But it's easier to seek satisfaction in person than on hold.

The intangibles are out in the open when you can visit a place of business. You'll sense whether the place is professional. You'll judge the type of products advertised and the professionalism of the employees.
