Five Chances at a Bargain Cruise

Start the Search

By Mark Kahler, About.com

How do you define a "bargain" cruise?

For some, it means spending less than a week's salary for a week at sea.

Others define "bargain" as less than $100 USD per day, per person.

Many are more concerned about the value they receive for each dollar, pound or peso.

Definitions vary, but most of us ask one question of prime importance: where do I find cruise deals?

What follows are five techniques for getting a good deal on your next cruise. As always, not every suggestion will work for every traveler or every situation. They're presented in no particular order of importance.

Choose a few that sound reasonable and get busy! Cruising is still one of the best ways to travel, and bargains abound.

Technique #1: Consult a Specialist

You might think the suggestion a bit obvious, but we're saying more here than just "consult a travel agent."

The help you need comes from a travel agent who specializes in cruising. Not all of them do so.

Some specialize in the Caribbean. Others will take you to Alaska or the Rhine with ease. Find a travel agent who specializes in the area you want to cruise and get suggestions.

Many times, a travel agent with this expertise will write down your preferences and call within a few days when something develops. Other times, he or she will already know about several good buys and book your trip the same day.
