Fare Sales in Winter

Winter airfare sales tend to be shortlived, but don't be discouraged if you miss the deadlines. This time of year, airlines often extend the dates or offer new sales.

The point is to watch for these opportunities and book them quickly if they fit your budget and your plans.

American Airlines offers roundtrip deals within the U.S. through February 13. Sample fares: Austin-Baltimore $218; Chicago-Seattle $240; and Denver-Miami $218. Check the restrictions carefully.

Virgin Atlantic offers "premium economy" tickets for winter travel starting at $364 one-way between Boston and London. You must purchase at least 21 days prior to travel and some dates are blacked out.

Icelandair.com offers some early winter fares. One example: Boston-London $360 roundtrip. These are branded as "holiday" fares, so they end in mid-December. Look on the Icelandair.com site for other winter deals.

EL AL offers winter economy fares from 30 U.S. destinations to Israel, starting at $954 roundtrip from cities on the east coast. The fares are good until March 31.
