John Sanders is neither the first nor the last adventurer to attempt such a trip. Many of these travelers tote a laptop with them, or at least make frequent visits to Internet cafes along the way. Here are a few others to follow:
Terry's Trek Terry is a guy from Maryland who admits he is not a seasoned traveler. Thus, his mistakes should be instructive and perhaps entertaining for the rest of us.
Cyber Nomad Matt Lerner recently completed his adventure. His site is packed with practical tips and journal entries from 384 days on the road.
Vagabonding.com Mike Pugh is a Chicagoan who started his adventure in Southeast Asia. His site includes scores of photos, journal entries and even political commentary.
ChickenBus.com gets its name from the slang term for the ricketty, crowded transportation travelers sometimes encounter in developing countries. Jeremy & Carrie Simmons did most of their trip by train, boat and -- you guessed it -- chicken bus.
Round The World by Bike Alastair Humphreys is working on an ambitious itinerary: "70,000 miles, 5 continents, 50 countries. Alone and on a bicycle. No buses, no hitching, no support vehicles." Read about his adventures and scores of others at bootsnall.com, which bills itself as "the ultimate resource for the independent traveler."
AroundTheWorlds.com is another site at which a variety of travelers post their information, which is presented in both French and English.
If you get so hooked on this stuff that you need a daily fix, many of the travelers will arrange an email delivery once a new journal entry is posted.
There's one other thing many offer: a link to their resumes, because they'll all go back to work somewhere. Eventually.
