Can you do without glitzy entertainment and a midnight buffet? Are you going on a cruise to enjoy the sea air and some exotic ports-of-call?
If so, you'll be pleased to know that it is possible to book passage on freighters.
These voyages are not for everyone. You'll have to entertain yourself, and the meals won't match up with what you'd expect on a luxury liner. The trips are generally longer, with many more days at sea.
The trade-off is found in much lower per-day costs and a chance to see ports the cruise lines might bypass.
It's not for honeymoons or people with a lot of special needs, but the more adventurous budget traveler should look into freighter travel.
