This advice applies to every part of your trip, but it starts with hotels and airfares. Many times, spending extra money on these items does not necessarily guarantee a better experience. On airfares, you should determine a range of times you can depart and return. Keep in mind that most low fares require a weekend stay and advance purchase time of two or three weeks.
