The Search for a Downtown Bargain

New York, Los Angeles, and a few other American Cities

By Mark Kahler, About.com

New York

The search in Manhattan turned up two hotels that met the search criteria of under $100 USD/night, two-star quality or above, and a favorable user review.

Hotel 17 came in at $89/night and is listed by Kayak as a three-star hotel 1.2 miles from the city center.

Herald Square Hotel made it under the wire at $99/night. It is listed as a two-star, and less than a mile from the city center.

Are there more hotels in Manhattan at under $100/night? At any given time, perhaps. Just realize that during the holidays or a major event, it's likely the number will dwindle.

Boston

The search here turned up one hotel, the Wyndham Chelsea at $80 for a three-star room. It just barely qualified on distance, at 2.9 miles from the center of Boston.

Washington, DC

Holiday Inn National Airport is a three-star listed at $69 at the moment my search became final. It's two miles from the center of Washington, but perhaps even more importantly, it's close to Reagan National, where Metro trains will take you many places for very little money.

Another hotel came in at $78: the Braxton Hotel is also a three-star listed within 1.3 miles of the city center.

Chicago

Comfort Inn and Suites qualified in the Windy City at $78 for three-star quality 0.3 miles from the center of Chicago. A second qualifier was the Tremont Hotel just off North Michigan Avenue at $86. It's listed as a four-star, 0.7 miles from center.

Denver

One qualifier in the Mile High city was La Quinta Inn Downtown at $58 for three-star rooms 1.9 miles from the center of Denver.

Los Angeles

Defining "downtown" in cities like Los Angeles and New York quickly make this experiment an academic exercise. Most people who go to these cities shop for a hotel centrally located to an address rather than a downtown. But in keeping with the spirit of the enterprise, there are three "downtown Los Angeles" entries:

Kawanda Hotel is listed at $68 for two-star quality just 0.3 miles from the center of downtown.

Comfort Inn Los Angeles registered at $70 for two-star rooms 1.7 miles from center. Best Western Mayfair was the third qualifier at $79 for a two-star property 1.4 miles from center.
