Alternatives to the Cheap Hotel Stay
Farm Stays and More Unusual Options

By , About.com Guide

Farm stays are limited in their practicality. If you're touring attractions in a major city or have to report to a business meeting, a farm stay probably isn't the best choice.

But if your itinerary includes only big cities, you're missing out on the flavor of the nation in which you are visiting. New York is not a microcosm of the United States; the same is true of London or Munich with respect to their nations.

Farm stays are more available than you might think. For example, Ben's Bauernhof Web site includes a page linking travelers with farmers in southern Germany and Austria. Some will let you camp on their properties at greater savings. Most offer a bed and facilities at very reasonable prices.

Farm stays are generally cheaper than the German bed and breakfasts, but perhaps a bit more expensive than hostels.

New Zealand is a country where farm stays have become quite popular. The GlenMac farmstay allows visitors to experience a sheep farm in the picturesque Waitaki Valley from $45 NZD ($30 USD) per person for bed and breakfast.

More Unusual Options

Every budget trip should include a number of splurges. Sometimes, for a bit more money, you can make a memory that will last a lifetime.

With that in mind, how about staying in a castle? What would you think about bunking down in a lighthouse?

Some of these options are economical, others will cost as much or more as a hotel room. But the value you receive could outweigh conventional options.

Castles do exist in North America. Many are favorite tourist sites, but some take overnight guests.

The same is true in Europe. There are scores of places where you can make arrangements, including Poland.

Castles on the Web will link you to scores of possibilities. Web France International links you to castles and manors that board visitors.

Have you ever thought about staying in a lighthouse? Lighthouse.cc provides links to American sites on the west coast, east coast and even one in Iowa; international links are also included.

Final note: Many of these suggestions on these pages might be too unusual for you, and some are downright impractical. The point here is to start your creative juices flowing. If a city's rooms seem a bit too expensive for your budget, look at every possible alternative. You might be surprised to find a place that is both affordable and memorable.
