Americans once shuddered at the thought of paying $3 USD for a gallon of gasoline. Now, many are wondering when that price will hit $5.
Travelers have slowly been conditioned to accept high gasoline prices. In many places at this writing, that amount represents a bargain. In Europe, such prices would prompt double-takes of delight.
Wherever the driver may roam, most will not cancel a trip because of gasoline prices. But many might have to cut back on other things for which they travel in the first place: new restaurant experiences, admissions to unique attractions, or side-trips to the romantic or unusual.

This trend began in 2004 with great fanfare, because at the time it was a novelty. Let's hope the need for these inducements will drop considerably in future years.
