When most people think of visiting Europe, thoughts turn immediately to Paris, London, or Rome. On a second or third trip, they might focus on Munich, Amsterdam, or Venice.
All of these places are worthy of multiple visits. Their popularity is not hard to understand. Travel writers cover them thoroughly and provide tips for experiencing them without breaking the bank.
But there are scores of other destinations you might not immediately recognize that are also worthy of a place on your itinerary.
As a budget traveler, you will reap rewards by learning to identify such places before the crowds arrive. These are places where war or occupation once made travel problematic. Perhaps until recently they were difficult to reach without expensive arrangements.
A decade ago, Prague and Budapest fit neatly into this category. But recent visitors to either city will tell you they had plenty of company, and prices are moving closer to what is found in London or Paris.
So if you're planning a European adventure this year, think about places less likely to develop tourism traffic jams.
