The Unknown Germany
East Frisian Gateways and Budget Bases

By Mark Kahler, About.com

Trains from Hannover arrive in several East Frisian cities. Leer and Emden might be the most convenient entry points. Deutsche Bahn operates an Inter-City train that covers the trip in just more than two hours. For the about same price, you can go non-stop to Wilhelmshaven, or to Emden, on the western edge of East Frisia.

From these stations, you can travel largely empty luxury buses for fares in the $10 USD range. Sixt offers car rentals in Emden (west) and Wilhelmshaven (east) if you want more independence.

There are plenty of smaller cities that make good bases for exploring the area. Aurich is an inland city with an altstadt (old city) and market area worth seeing.

The region raises about 4.5 million pot flowers each year. Wildlife lovers will marvel at the variety of species that live in the region's moors, meadows and canals, as well as the huge commercial operations. The Flower City of Wiesmoor offers quality budget accommodations. Hotel Torfkrug, for example, rents spacious double rooms in the 40 €/night range. I sought refuge there during a driving rainstorm a few years ago, and later was told there were even cheaper rooms elsewhere in town.

You can spend a delightful morning exploring Leer, where maritime history blends with intriguing architecture and East Frisian hospitality. Best Western East Frisia offers modern comfort starting at $90 USD/night next to the train station.

Restaurants serve a variety of price ranges, but this is not the place to go for five-star bistros. You will find open-air markets for picnic lunches, and full buffet breakfasts at most hotels.

Most of the tourists who come to this part of Germany do some "island hopping." Click "next" and discover some amazing North Sea islands.
