There is no mistaking the Taj Boston for a budget stopover. Located at the corner of Arlington and Newbury streets in the fashionable Back Bay section of Boston, this is one of those 5 star hotels long known for luxury. It offers all the amenities you'd expect in such a setting.
But budget travelers must learn not to shy away from such places. While not exactly budget-priced, many of these properties offer special rates that can make a luxury stay affordable.
For example, at certain times of the year, this property has made a "Stay & Play" offer that includes discount coupons at eight area stores, a full American breakfast and free valet parking from $219 USD/night (tax not included).
When you consider that a very ordinary room in a less-than-convenient location can cost this much or more, it's a deal worth seizing.
The problem is that many budget travelers would never venture a look at Taj Boston and other 5 star hotels like it. They simply don't believe it could be affordable.
But when you reserve a hotel room in a large city, you are also reserving a neighborhood. In this case, the location alone saves money on transportation. Taj Boston is within a short walk of some of the city's best shopping and dining. Across Arlington St. is Boston's often-photographed Public Garden and its famous Swan Boats. A few minutes further by foot puts you in Boston Commons and close to the city's Freedom Trail.
Standard rooms here are not particularly large (325 square feet), but those facing Arlington St. come with a view of the Boston skyline. This former Ritz property was renovated in 2002 to coincide with its 75th anniversary that year.
Taj Boston offers opulent common areas and dining facilities. The services you would expect in such a setting are in place: 24-hour front desk and room service; a fully equipped business center; concierge services; laundry/valet services, twice-daily housekeeping and more.
Hotels in this category often cater to business travelers, which means it can be valuable to check for weekend hotel discounts. A deluxe king here can come at a weekend rate as low as $237 USD+tax.
Again, that's hardly a rock-bottom rate, and you are likely to find something cheaper in Greater Boston for a one-night stay. But given the expense of staying in the Boston area, you are just as likely to pay more money for less service and a less strategic location.
In Boston and cities like it, consider if adding a few dollars to your hotel budget will enhance your trip and save money on other expenses.
