In most cases, North American visitors are spotted quickly when touring in Turkey. In my experience, the recognition brought with it pleasant, welcoming greetings. Turkey is about 1,200 miles in width east-to-west. It is a place relatively few people traverse. They visit to Istanbul or spend a few days on the west coast admiring the ruins of Ephesus, once the world's fourth-largest city.
Prices in Turkey are reasonable--once standing in stark contrast to nearby Greece. But prices in Athens and elsewhere have fallen in an attempt to bring back tourists driven away by the possibility of strikes and civil unrest. When Greece suffers a downturn, it doesn't help the region. Look for both places to offer bargains.
Turkey's accommodations are quite reasonable outside of resort areas or large cities. Hospitality abounds, and you're likely to make friends quickly. These encounters usually end with words like "if you like Turkey, tell your friends to visit too!"
