Carry-on Luggage for Budget Travel

By , About.com Guide

When you're tracking down travel deals, mobility is a powerful ally. In these days of long lines and tight security, do you really want to drag heavy, bulging luggage? Techniques for light packing are important, but it always helps to start with the right bag -- and at the right price, of course! Typically, carry-on bags must be no larger than 22 x 14 x 9". The following selections are smaller and will present a serious challenge to your one-bag packing ability. Yet these bags are also chosen for durability and price. All come in under $200 before taxes or shipping.

The Walkin' Bag by Swany

The Walkin' Bag has four swiveling wheels that allow it to roll in any direction, requiring less effort to pull. Dimensions are 20" X 13.5" x 10" and it's said to be strong enough to support up to 300 lbs. if you need it as a portable seat. The main compartment has a mesh zippered pocket, three removable mesh utility pockets, a snap-off zippered bag and garment straps. Three zippered exterior pockets and a slip pocket add more storage. Made of 1800D, stain-resistant Teflon-coated poly fabric, it's a bit heavier than most of our selections (9 lbs. empty) but comes with a telescoping handle and two carrying handles. Cost: $199.
