Target Mundane Expenses

Airport parking can send your travel expenses sky-high.

None of us relishes the thought of making changes in our lives.

I've just completed a year in which I changed jobs, changed careers and changed addresses. It was all for the best, but it wasn't always comfortable.

Well aware of our human resistance to reform, three years ago I reluctantly rolled out four budget travel resolutions for 2002. To my surprise, it became one of our most popular features at that time.

So in 2003 and 2004, I followed up with more ideas that would stretch your comfort zones and your buying power. The new year is a great time to think about such stretching.

Nothing in these Fourth Annual Budget Travel Resolutions will stretch or stress you like a career change or a cross-country move. The idea is simply to get you thinking about ways to make your money do more for you. When that happens, you can do and see things you never thought possible.

Resolution #1: I will target the least enjoyable travel expenditures and reduce them as much as possible.

A gourmet dinner in Paris or a Broadway show in New York will cost a bundle, but should bring you great enjoyment.

Unfortunately, your parking bill at the airport might amount to the same total. Not much fun involved, either.

Airport parking and even airfares are expenses that can be reduced without losing much comfort.

Taken a step further, you can apply it to hotel stays, too. How much time will you spend in your room? If the answer is few waking hours, why spend for lavish furnishings and fancy services?.

Take a good look at your itinerary and the items for which you will pay. Then learn ways to make those expenses drop.
