Pickpockets in some places actually post hand-lettered signs saying "beware of pickpockets."
They find that upon reading this sign, many travelers instinctively reach for their wallets, and thereby reveal the target pocket for picking.
Pickpockets are only one small part of the growing scam industry. Most are far more sophisticated.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission fields thousands of complaints a year from people who were promised luxury at a low price and got nothing but frustration and inconvenience. Travel is a service you often pay for prior to delivery. That's a prime reason why scammers enter the industry and thrive.
