Budget Travel Resolutions for 2007

Open the Train Schedule

Narrow aisles- -and cheap prices

Resolution #2: I will look at a train schedule when I plan my next vacation.

Visitors to Europe routinely look at train schedules, given the continent's outstanding network of routes, stations and services. But could catching a train elsewhere be just as wise?

Answers will vary. There will be times when train travel is expensive and impractical. The point is to find out. Either eliminate the train possibility or use it to your advantage.

For example, exploring the east coast of the U.S. in 2006 meant paying $3 USD or more for each gallon of gasoline. A couple of well-placed Amtrak trips connecting major cities and integrating with local mass transit made it possible to leave the family car at home. Not only was there no gasoline bill to pay, but train service often puts you in the center of a city, where tourist or business interests--and parking rates--are high.
