Resolution #5 I will not assume the old rules of buying airfares still apply on the day I want to travel.

Keep an eye on the ever-changing airline landscape. It's dotted with situations that could radically alter the way you buy a ticket.

Major airlines are considering mergers as a means of survival. They tell us it won't increase airfares. Federal regulators are looking at the legalities.

However these major carriers emerge from their financial struggles, they are still competing with budget airlines that see no need for things like Saturday-night stay requirements or lengthy advance purchase periods. The economy carriers fly in skies with fewer restrictions.

This means it might be possible to book a decent airfare without the fairly ridiculous 21-day advance purchase requirement. Look for offers that waive these requirements and send a message that a new day in airfares is needed.

Sink the Saturday-night stay rule and other unpleasant requirements
