Fall Travel Deals

Airfare Savings

By Mark Kahler, About.com

This is by no means an exhaustive list of deals for fall, but you should see enough here to whet your appetite for more!

Air France offers some great fares to Europe from various U.S. destinations. The catch: you have to book by August 17 for travel from September 10-October 28. If you can commit that early, you'll pay $218 each way for Philadelphia-Madrid. Washington-Istanbul is $382. The one-way fares are based on roundtrip purchase, and there are other restrictions.

American Airlines has a Fall-Winter sale good for travel between August 16-January 11 (except Florida flights). The airline states: "Tickets must be purchased at least 14 days prior to departure, or within 1 day of making reservations, whichever comes first." Examples: Austin-Chicago $198 USD; Denver-Baltimore $204; Nashville-Los Angeles $198. Watch for day-of-the-week restrictions and added fees.

Delta's Europe Sale from New York is good for outbound travel until October 27 with return by November 26. You must travel Monday-Thursday to get a $249-$299 one-way fare to Shannon, Frankfurt or Brussels. No advance purchase necessary.

Malaysia Airlines USA sometimes offers some great fares between New York and Europe. One recent example was $465 roundtrip New York-Stockholm for travel in September and October. That offer expires at the end of July, but it might be worth checking back later in the summer for similar offers.

United Airlines has a Coast-to-Coast promotion good for travel between August 16 and January 11. You must travel Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday to get the lowest fares with 14 day advance purchase. These are $99 one-way fares between, for example, Los Angeles-Philadelphia, Las Vegas-Chicago and Kansas City-San Diego. Roundtrip purchase is not required to get the sale fare.

Virgin America deals are likely to be plentiful in fall 2007 as the airline begins domestic service in the U.S. At start up in July, they offered San Francisco-Los Angeles for $44 one-way; San Francisco- or Los Angeles-Washington Dulles $129 one-way. Other cities served include Las Vegas and New York JFK.

Please note:

All the sale fares you encounter are base prices for the trip. You'll also need to add on taxes and fees. The fine print for each deal is required reading. Skipping this step leaves you open to potentially costly problems. Since many of these fares are non-refundable, you must understand the terms completely before you book.
