Many budget travelers like to spend their vacation day allotments at work sparingly. They build their holidays around days they already have off with pay -- Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day are but three American examples. It's not a bad strategy because it results in saved vacation days. But the problem with this approach is that most other travelers are operating under a similar plan. Hotels and airlines have much less incentive to offer up big discounts when they have seats and rooms that are full of paying customers. So consider spending those paid holidays at home and using vacation days to pay for
times when crowds could be thinner. In addition to saving money, you'll also benefit from shorter lines and more personal space at the beach.
