Argentine train day trip
- In January 2006, I visited Argentina using all public transportation and staying in youth hostels. While paying $6 a night for a reserved bed in a co-ed bunk bed room for 6 in downtown Buenos Aires wasn't bad, and the organized city tour riding a rented bicycle all over the city was definitely one of the highlights, my best bargain was taking the train from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata for a mere $7 (21 pesos) for a full day of travel with reserved, numbered seats through the endless Pampa. We then went to Chapadmalal, where we stayed with a lady who cooked our meals and got rides to the local c/o beach, one of only two in the whole country, fully supported by the government.

Best deal....
- I arrived in Bucharest and had no Hotel booked. I saw a quiet discreet hotel and went in. I asked how much a room for 1 person would cost per night. I was told 80 Euros per night. I said "No, sorry. That's too expensive and turned for the door. The receptionist then lowered her price to 50 Euros per night... including breakfast. I said "OK, I will stay 2 nights." When I went into the room, it was about 35 feet square. I could have held a dance in there! The built in bathroom / toilet was about 10 feet by 8 feet. Overall, huge would be an understatement. I stayed for 10 nights. So, don't forget, if they think you are dissatisfied with the price, they could be bluffing. My Hotel was, but the room was great.

saving cash
- While on holiday, in several places my ideal way to save money was to shop very near with small rides to various amenities. Some areas had most low prices and the food excellent.

Hong Kong Ferry
- I think the best travel bargain I ever found was in Hong Kong. I stood there at the harbor's edge wishing I had a boat to explore it. Someone told me about a ferry ride the locals took that cost the U.S. equivalent of 18 cents. It was a short walk to the terminal. You'd think it would have been popular with tourists, because it is written up in all the guidebooks. But I was the only tourist on a fairly large boat. We slowly made our way across the harbor and I shot pictures of the incredible Hong Kong skyline to my heart's content. At the end of the ride I got in line and took the return trip. It was a great way to see the harbor without even spending one U.S. dollar. My friends are tired of hearing this story, and I will admit it's now about 13 years old. Maybe that ferry price doesn't exist anymore, but like this article states, if you find how the locals eat or travel from place to place, chances are you'll find a bargain.
